corps history
creation

on october 24, 1862, war department issued general orders no. 168, creating both xiii corps , xiv corps. xiv corps organized troops of army of cumberland, , commanded general william rosecrans.


the army of ohio, under command of don carlos buell divided 3 unofficial corps designated i, ii , iii corps. when rosecrans took command army reorganized twelve divisions made 155 regiments of infantry, 1 regiment of engineers, 35 batteries of artillery, , 6 regiments of cavalry.

the army of cumberland , xiv corps virtually synonymous , therefore command of corps divided 3 wings same basic formation in former army of ohio. old corps became right wing under alexander m. mccook. ii corps became left wing under thomas l. crittenden. iii corps became center wing under george h. thomas, replacing charles c. gilbert. in formation corps fought @ battle of stones river losing on 25% in killed, wounded or missing.


battle of chickamauga

on january 9, 1863, in immediate aftermath of stones river, xiv corps wings given own official corps designations. mccook s right wing became xx corps. crittenden s left wing became xxi corps. thomas center wing remained xiv corps. thomas led corps distinction defense @ horseshoe ridge (in particular actions @ snodgrass hill) protecting federal army complete rout following battle of chickamauga.

following chickamauga, thomas given command of army of cumberland , john m. palmer led corps @ battle of missionary ridge , during of atlanta campaign.


march towards atlanta

battle of utoy creek xiv army corps placed under command of army of ohio mg schofield 1 august 1864 , 2 corps assigned sherman break railroad lines @ east point. ensuing battle of utoy creek initial assault johnson s 1st division on 5 august , supporting attack on 6 august 1864 came close success. due disagreement of date of rank between mg palmer , mg schofield after battle schofield unsuccessfully commanded. richard w. johnson briefly commanded corps after palmer s resignation during siege of atlanta 1864. jefferson c. davis took command of corps , led during battle of jonesboro.


savannah campaign

following fall of atlanta, xiv corps detached army of cumberland , assigned became army of georgia. davis remained in command of corps , fought @ battle of bentonville in 1865.
