early life , education

shelton born in houston, texas. graduated lamar high school in houston. attended washington , lee university, texas a&m university, , university of texas @ austin, received bachelor s degree in social sciences in 1961. cartoons published in university of texas humor magazine texas ranger.

career

directly after graduation, shelton moved new york city , got job editing automotive magazines, sneak drawings print. work of published in warren publishing s help! idea character of wonder wart-hog, porcine parody of superman, came him in 1961. following year, shelton moved texas enroll in graduate school , student deferment draft. first 2 wonder wart-hog stories appeared in bacchanal, short-lived college humor magazine, in spring of 1962. same year, published (in zine form) foolbert sturgeon s adventures of jesus, 1 of first underground comix. became editor of texas ranger , published more wonder wart-hog stories.

after switching graduate school art school (where befriended singer janis joplin) 2 years, drafted, army doctors declared him medically unfit after admitted taking psychedelic drugs. after this, in 1964 , 1965, spent time in cleveland, girlfriend pat brown (another ut alum) going cleveland institute of art. applied job @ cleveland-based american greeting card company (where fellow underground comic artist robert crumb had worked) turned down.

the period of 1965–1968 itinerant 1 shelton: moved new york work underground east village other, , los angeles work los angeles free press. around time shelton became art director vulcan gas company, rock music venue in austin, texas, worked jim franklin. created number of posters in style of contemporary california poster artists such victor moscoso , rick griffin. after year of this, moved san francisco in 1968, hopeful being closer action enable him more poster work; turned out, got break in world of underground comix.

that same year, millar publishing company, had been publishing regular wonder wart-hog stories since 1966, published 2 issues of wonder wart-hog. 140,000 copies of each printed, distributors did not pick magazine, , 40,000 of each sold.

in 1968 shelton self-publlished feds n heads, collection of strips first published in austin underground paper rag (feds n head later re-issued multiple times print mint), feds n heads featured wonder wart-hog , became famous strip, fabulous furry freak brothers. shelton created spin-off strip, fat freddy s cat in 1969, when co-founded rip off press 3 fellow expatriate texans: fred todd, dave moriaty, , cartoonist jack jackson.

his recent work, in collaboration french cartoonist pic, not quite dead, appeared in rip off comix #25 (rip off press, winter 1989) , in 6 not quite dead comic books. new wonder wart-hog story appeared in zap comix #15 (last gasp, 2005), complete zap boxed set (fantagraphics, 2014) contained zap #16; , new fabulous furry freak brothers story appeared in zap #16 well. freak brothers antics reportedly being turned broadway musical, after stop motion animated film, titled grass roots, fell through.

in 1966 shelton formed gilbert shelton ensemble , released 45 record on esp records, if hells angel b/w southern stock car man.

since moving france, shelton has become part of rhythm , blues group, blum brothers, featuring shelton on vocals , piano. band features fellow cartoonist musician bruno blum, has produced (so far unreleased) full album of band. blum brothers played regularly @ jockomo, new orleans-style bar in 11th arrondissement of paris, several other bars on rue st. maur, since september 2008 jockomo had cease hosting live music due neighbors complaints.

shelton , wife, literary agent lora fountain, left san francisco in 1979. residents of barcelona, spain, in 1980–1981, , moved france in 1984.
