gunter started out striker when played durham colts , albion rovers junior teams in newport switched full-back @ young age , signed cardiff city youth side @ age of eight. signed first professional contract club on 1 august 2006 along fellow cardiff academy graduate darcy blake.
primarily right-sided defender, gunter made debut cardiff city on 22 august 2006 against barnet in league cup first round, playing full 90 minutes of 0–2 loss @ ninian park. league debut came in 1–0 home loss qpr on 17 november. gunter praised performance manager dave jones.

on 17 july 2009, tottenham hotspur accepted bid of £1.75 million nottingham forest. forest completed signing of gunter on 20 july on four-year contract. scored first goal club in 1–0 victory @ plymouth argyle on 27 september 2009. gunter s first goal in senior football. in match between nottingham forest , crystal palace on 23 march 2010, gunter made 100th senior club appearance. in may 2010 selected in championship pfa team of year 2009–10 season.
