after integration of south african national defence force navy increasingly called on assist peacekeeping operations. realising situation continue, chief of navy refiloe johannes mudimu, decided create capability creating naval rapid deployment force. operational boat squadron formed in 2006 ensure south africa commit meaningfully peacekeeping @ great lakes.


the rapid deployment force became maritime reaction squadron on 1 september 2006.
