gunter completed move reading on 17 july 2012, signing three-year deal club had been promoted premier league. fee undisclosed has been reported have been between £2.3 million , £2.5 million. scored first goal reading against peterborough united in league cup on 28 august 2012, 3–2 home victory putting team third round. played 20 league matches royals, ended season relegated. on 29 november 2013, gunter sent off reading won 3–2 @ former club forest.


on 27 march 2015, reading took option in gunter s contract extend stay royals additional year. in league cup first round on 11 august, scored extra-time goal reading won away @ colchester united.


on 18 february 2016, gunter signed new two-year contract keep him @ reading until summer of 2018. gunter again extended contract reading on 5 july 2017, agreeing new three-year contract, keeping him @ club until summer of 2020. in october 2017, gunter named welsh footballer of year football association of wales.
