riley named starter 2009 season week before team s season opener against maryland, contrast 2008 when head coach jeff tedford alternated between him , nate longshore. on september 5, riley threw 298 yards , 4 touchdowns against terrapins, each different receiver. following week against eastern washington threw 151 yards , score, getting first rushing touchdown of season. @ cal s first away game on september 19 against minnesota, passed 252 yards. riley struggled following week against oregon, being sacked 4 times , held 123 passing yards. although replaced in fourth quarter beau sweeney, bears muster field goal oregon s 42 points. riley fared better against usc on october 3, throwing 198 yards , interception. however, bears again blown out in 30-3 loss.

two weeks later against ucla, riley bounced back, leading bears 45-26 victory in threw 205 yards , 3 touchdowns. followed 229-yard , 3 touchdown performance against washington state, worst team in conference. riley played perhaps best game of season against arizona state in tempe. cal narrowly defeated sun devils 23-21, riley throwing 351 yards , pair of touchdowns. on november 7, despite passing 200 yards , touchdown, cal sustained fifth straight loss oregon state. in cal s final home game against #18 arizona, bears upset wildcats 24-16. riley threw 181 yards , touchdown, being intercepted twice. cal entered big game against stanford underdog on november 21, hanging on pull off 34-28 upset in riley threw 235 yards , touchdown. regular season ended riley on sour note, upset washington in sacked 5 times, despite throwing score , 215 yards. against utah in poinsettia bowl, riley passed 214 yards in 37-27 loss. accounted 3 of cal s turnovers , sacked 4 times.

riley entered 2010 season pac-10 conference leader in wins , touchdown passes. named watch list manning award on july 22. despite inconsistent performance in 2009, retained starting quarterback job. in season opener against uc davis on september 4, riley threw 258 yards , 3 touchdowns, following 197 yards , 4 scores, different receivers, following week against colorado. on september 17 had 277 yards, touchdown , 3 interceptions in loss nevada in reno, while throwing 116 yards , interception in narrow loss arizona on september 25. on october 9 against ucla, threw 83 yards , touchdown, while scoring himself on rushing touchdown.

riley sustained season-ending injury left knee when hit low during october 30 road game against oregon state , had helped field. did not return game. junior redshirt brock mansion starter remainder of season.
