2007 | european union amateur championships

in 2007, barnes competed @ eu championships in dublin. had medal hopes crushed when suffered nasty eye injury. bleeding found behind retina, barnes forced out of competition.

2007 | world amateur championships

at world championships in chicago barnes missed out on bronze medal after defeated china s zou shiming in quarter finals, zou went on win gold medal. however, barnes qualified 2008 olympics virtue of getting quarter finals.

2008 | european union amateur championships

in 2008, barnes returned eu championships, time in cetniewo, poland. barnes made final lost hungarian fighter pál bedák. silver medal enough secure place @ summer olympics.

2008 | olympic games

barnes won ireland s first medal of 2008 games winning quarter final bout in light flyweight division. barnes won bronze medal after again defeated shiming zou, time in semi-final, in match replays showed of barnes landed punches counted points zou.

2010 | european amateur championships

on 12 june 2010, barnes won gold medal in light flyweight division @ 2010 european amateur boxing championships. barnes, 4–1 winner on azerbaijan s elvin mamishzade, 1–0 @ end of first round, 3–1 ahead @ end of second , sealed victory final point in third 4–1.

barnes represented northern ireland @ 2010 commonwealth games. won gold medal, defeating namibia s jafet uutoni 8–4 in final.

2012 | olympic games

barnes @ 2016 olympics

at 2012 summer olympics defeated thomas essomba cameroon 15–10 beat india s devendro singh in quarter-final bout guarantee himself @ least bronze medal. in doing so, became first irish boxer win medals @ 2 consecutive olympic games.

for semi-final, barnes once again drew chinese superstar zou shiming, had defeated barnes in 2008 semi-finals before taking gold. barnes gave fearless performance against 3 time world champion, judges tying them 15–15 on scorecards, barnes lose via 45–44 countback. shiming once again went on win gold.

2014 | commonwealth games

as captain of northern ireland boxing team in 2014 @ glasgow, barnes led way winning gold in flyweight division defeating india s l. devendro singh. first time northern irish boxer had defended commonwealth title. tournament held @ scottish exhibition , conference centre. 17 boxers 17 nations took part. after competition, barnes chosen mbe in 2015 new year honours, services boxing , community in northern ireland.

2015 | world series of boxing

barnes competed in wsb 2014–2015 season. along michael conlan, drafted italia thunder had fought once in previous season. first fight came against magomed ibiyev of baku fires, in baku. barnes won 49–46, 49–46, 50–44 unanimous decision.

his second fight win, time on anthony ortiz italia thunder met puerto rico hurricanes. judges scored 48–47, 49–46, 49–46 barnes took unanimous decision win. hussars of poland next up, in konin. barnes continued perfect start season landslide 50–45, 50–43, 50–45 victory on sebastien jagodzinski.

his record season went 4 wins 4 unanimous decisions, when defeated kazakh fighter temirtas zhussupoy of astana arlans, in almaty. next fight in maiquetia, split decision win on caciques de venezuela s finol rivas. judges scored bout 49–45, 49–45, 47–48 in favour of barnes.

barnes chosen bearer of flag of ireland tricolour @ 2016 olympic games, barnes considered incredible honour . @ 2016 summer olympics barnes defeated 2–1 samuel carmona in round of 16.

barnes lost ulster title in 2005, 2006 , 2007. has faced jimmy moore st. francis club in limerick in each of national finals being runner in 2006 winning all-ireland title in 2007 , 2008.
