the company established mechanical workshop , iron works in 1873 engineer wincentz thurmann ihlen, name w. ihlen, strømmen. main product railway cars, first being produced in 1874. ihlen family retained ownership of company, nils claus ihlen taking on works in 1883, changing name strømmens værksted, , sons joakim , alf ihlen in 1908, transformed limited company. nils claus ihlen later become minister of labour, overseeing opening of bergen line among others.
the iron works rebuilt steel works in 1902, , first sterling produced delivered, specializing in propellers 4 tonnes. in 1925 strømmens started production of buses, first delivery in 1929. built in aluminum , equipped leyland engine. important customer oslo sporveier, , during world war ii of buses rebuilt trolleybuses. works mounted dodge cars taxis.
in 1970 company split in 2 independent companies. strømmens verksted a/s railway factory , strømmen stål a/s steel works. strømmen stål closed in 1970s, , few years later thon gruppen bought , transformed shopping mall strømmen storsenter, 1 of largest in country.
the workshop still in use. after having been bought norsk elektrisk & brown boveri, norwegian subsidiary of brown, boveri & cie (bbc) in 1978, later transferred asea brown boveri in 1988 when merged elektrisk bureau form eb strømmens verksted, adtranz in 1996 when named adtranz strømmen, in 1999 sold daimler chrysler changing name daimler chrysler rail system norway , bombardier transportation, changing name bombardier transportation norway. division occupied maintenance , modernizing of rolling stock nsb. new norwegian royal train 1 of last cars built @ strømmen.
