kratos warrior serves greek gods of olympus. flashbacks reveal once successful captain in spartan army , led men several victories before being defeated barbarian king. facing death, kratos called on god of war, ares, whom promised serve if god spare men , provide power destroy enemies. ares agreed , bonded blades of chaos, pair of chained blades forged in depths of tartarus, new servant. kratos, equipped blades, decapitated barbarian king.

kratos waged war @ behest of ares, leading attack on village occupied worshipers of athena. ares had secretly transported kratos wife , daughter village; during frenzied attack on temple, kratos accidentally killed them. although ares believed act free kratos become perfect warrior, spartan instead renounced pledge of servitude god. oracle of destroyed village cursed kratos bonding ashes of dead family skin, turning ash-white , earning him nickname, ghost of sparta . plagued nightmares of horrible deed, kratos vowed serve other gods in hope of ridding himself of visions.

kratos enters desert of lost souls, , athena tells him pandora s box hidden in temple chained of titan cronos—a punishment zeus cronos role in great war. kratos summons cronos, climbs 3 days before reaching temple entrance, overcomes array of deadly traps , army of monsters, , finds box. ares, aware of former servant s success, kills kratos latter leaving temple. while harpies take box ares, kratos falls underworld. battles way through fiery realm, , mysterious gravedigger, tells him athena not god watching on him, escapes , returns athens.

kratos recovers pandora s box ares, opens it, , uses power become godlike. despite ares best efforts destroy kratos physically , mentally, including stripping him of blades of chaos , magic, survives , kills ares blade of gods. athens saved, , although athena tells kratos sins forgiven, gods refuse rid him of nightmares. forsaken gods, tries commit suicide casting himself aegean sea, athena intervenes , transports him mount olympus. reward services gods, provides kratos new set of blades , seat new god of war.
