the izumo-class ships 132.28 meters (434 ft 0 in) long overall , 121.92 meters (400 ft 0 in) between perpendiculars. had beam of 20.94 meters (68 ft 8 in) , had average draft of 7.21 7.26 meters (23 ft 8 in 23 ft 10 in). ships displaced 9,423 9,503 metric tons (9,274 9,353 long tons) @ normal load , 10,235 10,305 metric tons (10,073 10,142 long tons) @ deep load. had metacentric heights of 0.73 0.88 meters (2 ft 5 in 2 ft 11 in). crew consisted of 672 officers , enlisted men.
the ships had 2 4-cylinder triple-expansion steam engines, each driving single propeller shaft. steam engines provided 24 belleville boilers , engines rated @ total of 14,500 indicated horsepower (10,800 kw). sisters had designed speed of 20.75 knots (38.43 km/h; 23.88 mph) , both exceeded @ least 1 knot (1.9 km/h; 1.2 mph) during sea trials 15,739 16,078 ihp (11,737 11,989 kw). carried 1,527 long tons (1,551 t) of coal , steam 7,000 nautical miles (13,000 km; 8,100 mi) @ speed of 10 knots (19 km/h; 12 mph).

the main armament of six-six fleet armored cruisers 4 armstrong whitworth-built 45-caliber eight-inch guns in twin-gun turrets fore , aft of superstructure. electrically operated turrets capable of 130° rotation left , right, , guns elevated +30° , depressed −5°. each turret accommodated 65 shells, reloaded through doors in turret floor , ship s deck allowed electric winch in turret hoist shells shell room deep in hull. guns manually loaded , had rate of fire 1.2 rounds per minute. 203-millimeter gun fired 250-pound (113.5 kg) armor-piercing (ap) projectiles @ muzzle velocity of 2,500 feet per second (760 m/s) range of 20,000 yards (18,000 m).

the secondary armament consisted of fourteen elswick ordnance company pattern z quick-firing (qf), 40-caliber, six-inch (152 mm) guns. 4 of these guns mounted in armored casemates on main , upper decks, , mounts on upper deck protected gun shields. 100-pound (45.4 kg) ap shells fired @ muzzle velocity of 2,300 feet per second (700 m/s). ships equipped dozen 40-caliber qf 12-pounder 12-cwt guns , 8 qf 2.5-pounder yamauchi guns close-range defense against torpedo boats. former gun fired three-inch (76 mm), 12.5-pound (5.7 kg) projectiles @ muzzle velocity of 2,359 feet per second (719 m/s).
the izumo-class ships equipped 4 submerged 18-inch (457 mm) torpedo tubes, 2 on each broadside. type 30 torpedo had 100-kilogram (220 lb) warhead , 3 range/speed settings: 870 yards (800 m) @ 27 knots (50 km/h; 31 mph), 1,100 yards (1,000 m) @ 23.6 knots (43.7 km/h; 27.2 mph) or 3,300 yards (3,000 m) @ 14.2 knots (26.3 km/h; 16.3 mph).
protection
all of six-six fleet armored cruisers used same armor scheme minor differences, 1 of 4 later ships used krupp cemented armor. waterline belt ran full length of ships , thickness varied 7.0 inches (178 mm) amidships 3.5 inches (89 mm) @ bow , stern. thickest part of belt covered middle of ship length of 275 feet 2 inches (83.87 m). had height of 7 feet 0 inches (2.13 m), of 4 feet 4 inches 4 feet 7 inches (1.33 1.39 m) underwater. upper strake of belt armor 5.0 inches (127 mm) thick , extended upper edge of waterline belt main deck. extended 167 feet 11 inches 174 feet 11 inches (51.18 53.31 m) forward rear barbette. izumo class had oblique 5-inch armored bulkhead closed off ends of central armored citadel.
the barbettes, gun turrets , front of casemates 6 inches thick while sides , rear of casemates protected 51 millimeters (2.0 in) of armor. deck 63 millimeters (2.5 in) thick , armor protecting conning tower 356 millimeters (14.0 in) in thickness. ships had 30 watertight compartments in double bottom , additional 136 or 137 between bottom , upper deck.
