the sherpas listed here climbing sherpas hired rob hall s adventure consultants. there many other sherpas working @ lower elevations, performed duties vital adventure consultants , mountain madness expeditions. climbing sherpas duties require them ascend @ least high camp iii or iv, not of them summit. expedition leaders intend select few of climbing sherpas summit. legendary sardar apa sherpa scheduled accompany adventure consultants group withdrew due family commitments.


none of clients on hall s team had ever reached summit of 8,000 m peak, , fischbeck, hansen , hutchison had previous high-altitude himalayan experience.


hall had brokered deal outside magazine advertising space in exchange story growing popularity of commercial expeditions everest. krakauer slated climb scott fischer s mountain madness team, hall landed him, @ least in part, agreeing reduce outside s fee krakauer s spot on expedition less cost. result, hall paying out-of-pocket have krakauer on team.

c.^ sherpas listed here climbing sherpas hired scott fischer s mountain madness expedition. ngawang topche hospitalized in april; had developed high altitude pulmonary edema (hape) while ferrying supplies above base camp. not on mountain during summit attempt of 10 may. topche died illness june.

schoening had decided, while still @ base camp (5,380 m/17,700 ft), not make final push summit. team began assault on summit on 6 may, bypassing camp (5,944 m/19,500 ft) , stopping @ camp ii (6,500 m/21,300 ft) 2 nights. however, kruse suffered altitude sickness , possible high altitude cerebral edema (hace), , stopped @ camp i. fischer descended camp ii , escorted kruse base camp treatment.


taiwanese expedition

makalu gau ming-ho led five-member team everest day.


the previous day (9 may), taiwanese team member chen yu-nan had died following fall on lhotse face.


indo-tibetan border police

half climbing team indo-tibetan border police north col expedition india (subedar tsewang samanla, lance naik dorje morup, , head constable tsewang paljor) died on northeast ridge.
