when republic of ireland act enacted, united kingdom cabinet debated whether should use new name in preference eire . having said minded , invited comment, prime minister of northern ireland (sir basil brooke, ulster unionist) objected in strongest possible terms, saying new description intended repeat eire s claim jurisdiction on whole island. attlee partly accepted argument, saying [uk] bill should formally recognise title republic of ireland description irish republic employed in official usage. indeed, despite belfast agreement, british publications still follow style (see below).
