the earliest evidence of silk production in china found @ sites of yangshao culture in xia, shanxi, cocoon of bombyx mori, domesticated silkworm, cut in half sharp knife dated between 5000 , 3000 bc. fragments of primitive looms seen sites of hemudu culture in yuyao, zhejiang, dated 4000 bc. scraps of silk found in liangzhu culture site @ qianshanyang in huzhou, zhejiang, dating 2700 bc. other fragments have been recovered royal tombs in [shang dynasty] (c. 1600 – c. 1046 bc).
under shang dynasty, han chinese clothing or hanfu consisted of yi, narrow-cuffed, knee-length tunic tied sash, , narrow, ankle-length skirt, called shang, worn bixi, length of fabric reached knees. clothing of elite made of silk in vivid primary colours.
