after graduating salem in 1980 degree in physical education, carey offered position assistant coach of boys team @ high school flemington, west virginia. carey interested, job offer came catch. had head coach of girls team. accepted offer. went on coach girls basketball @ high school level 7 years, in flemington , @ liberty high school in clarksburg, west virginia. in final year high school coach, earned coach of year honors harrison county , coached team regional finals.

carey returned alma mater , became assistant coach salem men s basketball program in 1987. after 1 year assistant became head coach in 1988. program did not have history of success, posting 8–19 record in year before took over, carey coached team winning record in first year head coach. in thirteen seasons, teams had 1 losing record. in 9 of thirteen years, team won more 20 games. twice, teams made division ii elite 8 , in 1997, team made division ii final four.

carey celebrated milestone 250th victory on january 29, 2000, in 86–76 victory on shepherd college. @ time, had coached teams west virginia intercollegiate athletic conference championship 5 times. time completed coaching career @ salem, teams coached made 7 post-season appearances, 5 in ncaa division ii tournaments, , 2 in naia tournaments.

in 2007–08, team earned first top 20 ranking in school history, reaching high 11th place in both major polls. ended year @ 25–8, , advanced second round of ncaa tournament.

in 2009–10, west virginia won school-record 29 games. team ranked high #7 in ap poll during year, , reached semi-finals of big east women s basketball tournament, fall connecticut. despite success of year, carey still has not achieved 1 of goals—to beat connecticut. said, 10th year , ve beat every team in conference except connecticut . team undefeated @ home second time in program history. big east voted him co-coach of year, along geno auriemma.

carey s 200th win @ west virginia occurred on february 19, 2011, in game against pittsburgh. west virginia had failed win in previous 3 attempts reach 200 win milestone, team prevailed against pittsburgh 90–79.

after 24–10 season in 2011, carey s mountaineers lost 5 seniors graduation. team has 4 incoming freshman, class ranked #21, espnu hoopgurlz.

on december 28, carey s team helped him reach milestone–his 500th career victory. game didn t start out finish—opponent bucknell university started out 6–2 lead before mountaineers ran off 12 straight points take large lead. west virginia ended winning easily, 72–30, leading carey s 212th win @ west virginia, , 500th career victory, after 228 wins @ salem.

carey s team achieved biggest win in basketball history on february 12, 2011, when beat notre dame @ notre dame 65–53. notre dame had single loss prior win, , ranked # 2 in nation, both ap , espn coaches poll.
