in 1828, salmon left europe united states on packet ship, new york , arriving on new years day, 1829 , staying until 1840. living in small hut on marine railway wharf overlooking boston harbor, salmon prospered marine painter, accepting commissions paint ship portraits. during growth of boston harbor in first half of century, salmon painted between 300-400 paintings of harbor, in style of 17th century dutch genre painting. thought eccentric, solitary , irascible man.


salmon became 1 of prominent boston seascape painters. during ensuing years, divided time between painting , working in lithographic studio of william s. pendleton, encountered william bradford , fitz henry lane. contact between lane , salmon of great importance lane, , became evident in marine views.


during lifetime, salmon s work popular, , collected bostonians samuel cabot, robert bennett forbes, , john newmarch cushing.
