in 1996, pascrell ran new jersey s 8th congressional district , defeated republican incumbent bill martini 51%-48%, margin of 6,249 votes. pascrell helped bill clinton s easy victory in new jersey in year s presidential election. has never faced contest close; since then, has been reelected @ least 62 percent of vote.

2012

after redistricting, pascrell s home placed in newly redrawn 9th district. fellow democratic congressman steve rothman decided move reconfigured 9th , challenge pascrell in primary. rothman s home in fair lawn had been drawn republican-leaning district against republican scott garrett. geographically, new district more rothman s district pascrell s. rothman had represented 53% of new 9th, while pascrell had represented 43% of new 9th.

despite this, pascrell defeated rothman in democratic primary on june 5, 31,435 19,947, capturing approximately 61.1% of vote. in general election, defeated rabbi shmuley boteach 73.6% 25.4%.

2012 election controversy

rothman s candidacy in 2012 primary race reportedly devolved highly competitive proxy war on israel. aref assaf, president of new jersey-based american arab forum, published column in star-ledger titled, rothman israel s man in district 9 in wrote:

“as total , blind support becomes reason choosing rothman, voters not view elections in prism need take notice. loyalty foreign flag not loyalty america’s [flag].”

arabic-language campaign posters produced pascrell supporters reportedly encouraged arab diaspora community elect pascrell, friend of arabs. poster touted race important election in history of [arab american] community.

susan rosenbluth, publisher of new jersey-based jewish voice , opinion wrote number of arab-american constituents have come out outrageous attacks on rothman, , commented haven t heard dual loyalty charge years. sharply criticized pascrell remaining silent , refusing condemn charges of dual loyalty.

on october 10, 2002, pascrell among 81 democratic house members voted in favor of authorizing invasion of iraq.

pascrell 1 of original members of homeland security committee, rising post of ranking member on emergency preparedness subcommittee. has particular interest in fire safety, , authored bill created assistance firefighters grant program, gives federal grants directly fire departments, including volunteer fire departments, calls forgotten part of public safety equation .

pascrell italian american , has been outspoken representation of italian-americans in media regarding sees negative stereotypes in shows such hbo s sopranos. italian heritage questioned comedian stephen colbert of colbert report, alleged in interview pascrell not of italian descent because italian surnames must end vowel. pressed colbert example of italian surname ending in consonant, pascrell responded sole .

during bruce springsteen , e street band s 2009 working on dream tour, pascrell asked investigations federal trade commission , u.s. department of justice practices of ticketmaster , ticketsnow in regard sales of tickets tour s new jersey shows. pascrell subsequently introduced proposed federal legislation, titled boss act (better oversight of secondary sales , accountability in concert ticketing), require primary ticket sellers disclose how many tickets being held sale, prohibit ticket brokers buying tickets during first 48 hours on sale, , prohibit primary ticket sellers, promoters, , artists entering secondary market. in 2012, problems again arose during first ticket sales springsteen s 2012 wrecking ball tour. ticketmaster said web traffic 2.5 times highest level year. shows selling out within minutes , many tickets @ higher prices appeared on resale websites such stubhub less hour after onsale time. pascrell again responded saying reintroduce boss act bill congress.

after death of young boy in district returned playing football without having recovered concussion sustained earlier in season in october 2008, pascrell introduced concussion treatment , care tools act (the contact act), has received endorsements of national football league, national football league players association, , brain injury association of america. legislation brings conference of experts produce consensus set of guidelines treatment , care of concussions middle , high school students. provides funding schools adoption of baseline , post-injury neuropsychological testing technologies.

in january 2011, congressman pascrell responded tucson shooting of congresswoman gabrielle giffords stating, [t]here s aura of hate , elected politicians feed it, people on fox news feed it.

on march 12, 2013, pascrell introduced traumatic brain injury reauthorization act of 2013 (h.r. 1098; 113th congress), bill reauthorize appropriations centers disease control , prevention (cdc) projects reduce incidence of traumatic brain injury , projects related track , monitor traumatic brain injuries. co-founder , co-chair of congressional brain injury task force, founded in 2001 , includes more hundred members of congress.
