after reaching australian waters, sydney spent of time on fleet exercises , training cruises. in 1938, cruiser 1 of several ran units prepared respond munich crisis, ships stood down after potential war averted. 17 19 april 1939, sydney 1 of 8 warships involved in joint forces trade protection exercise off south-east australian coast. in august 1939, sydney in darwin, prior visiting netherlands east indies. however, in response events prompted start of world war ii, sydney ordered sail fremantle on war footing, arrived on 22 august.
