sts-124 discovery (may 31 june 14, 2008) 123rd space shuttle flight, , 26th shuttle flight international space station. sts-124 launched kennedy space center in cape canaveral, florida, , docked international space station on june 2 deliver japanese experiment module pressurized module (jem-pm) , japanese remote manipulator system. during 9 days docked space station, sts-124 shuttle astronauts delivered 37-foot (11-meter) kibo lab , moved logistics module permanent home on top of jem-pm. garan accumulated 20 hours , 32 minutes of eva time in 3 spacewalks required maintain station , prime new japanese module s robotic arm.
sts-124 delivered new station crew member, expedition 17 flight engineer greg chamitoff. replaced expedition 16 flight engineer garrett reisman, returned earth sts-124 crew. sts-124 mission completed in 218 orbits, traveling 5,735,643 miles in 13 days, 18 hours, 13 minutes , 7 seconds.
ron garan s second mission crew member on expedition 27/28. soyuz tma-21 launch craft named gagarin in honor of 50th anniversary, 8 days after launch on april 4, of first human spaceflight yuri gagarin. garan participated in last space-shuttle-based spacewalk during sts-135 mission, accumulating additional 6 hours , 31 minutes of eva time. returned earth aboard tma-21 on september 16, 2011.
