grande island , remains of fort wint incorporated u.s. naval base subic bay. 2 10-inch (25-cm) disappearing guns of battery warwick dismantled united states navy in 1960s , shipped fort casey renovation , display. 4 3-inch guns of batteries flake , jewell removed , divided between forts flagler , casey in washington state remain on display. 6-inch guns of battery hall remain in place (pictures right). grand island operated many decades after ww ii subic bay navy special services on base resort military , civilians stationed though out philippines. accessible via small landing craft type boat shuttle service @ pier adjacent alava carrier pier in front of hq building @ naval station subic bay. during operation new life, in 1975, thousands of vietnamese refugees sheltered , processed on grande island after fall of viet nam viet cong. after rescue mission, lasted 6 months, grande island rehabilitated , restored special services resort configuration until 1991. @ time lease on military bases expired , bases closed same time destroyed eruption of mount pinatubo volcano. grande island restored resort after repairs damage mount pinatubo volcano eruption, restored civilian philippine subic bay free port zone authority following closure of subic naval base in 1992.
