kogarah derived aboriginal word meaning rushes or place of reeds. had been written coggera , cogerah , kuggerah current spelling settled when railway line came through area in 1880s.


early land grants in area made john townson (1760–1835) received 910 hectares (2,250 acres) 1808 1810, centred on hurstville , james chandler, neighbouring estate centred on bexley. district provided fruit, vegetables , oysters sydney. in 1869, st paul s church of england opened on rocky point road (now princes highway). built on 0.81 hectares (2 acres) of land given church william wolfen swedish consul sydney, owned 320 hectares (800 acres) in kogarah. suburb grew around church , gardeners arms hotel. kogarah became municipality in 1885.


the former neighbourhood of moorefield part of kogarah. 24-hectare (60-acre) land grant governor lachlan macquarie in 1812 patrick moore, built fine house there. moorefield racecourse built descendant opened in 1888. brigadier general john lamrock cb vd appointed secretary of moorefield race club in 1912 , remained in position until in 1935. moorefield estate subdivided in 1950s , department of education purchased 7.7 hectares (19 acres), built 2 high schools , college of further education. moorefields girls high school erected there in 1955 on former site of moore s farm.
