port townsend noted victorian houses , significant historical buildings. city has more dozen large, well-preserved buildings, including port townsend public library (a 1913 carnegie library), federal building (now commonly known city s post office), rose theatre, , elks lodge, houses silverwater cafe. fort worden, state park, has retained of pre-world war architecture built when military facility. buildings have been adapted other uses, including publicly available olympic youth hostel, closed in 2011. jefferson county courthouse in romanesque architectural style, popularized henry hobson richardson, 125-foot bell tower.
in 1976, downtown waterfront , parts of uptown designated registered historic district. later, fort worden (now part of fort worden state park) , city of port townsend designated national historic landmarks. city 1 of 3 victorian seaports on national register of historic places.
bell tower
the bell tower on bluff above downtown 1 of 2 known towers of type in united states. used 1890 1940s call volunteer firefighters. restored in 2003 jefferson county historical society. second bell tower located in helena, montana, , used fire alarms during late 19th century.
