the mordvins (also mordva, mordvinians) remain 1 of larger indigenous peoples of russia. consist of 2 major subgroups, erzya , moksha, besides smaller subgroups of qaratay, teryukhan , tengushev (or shoksha) mordvins have become russified or turkified during 19th 20th centuries. less 1 third of mordvins live in autonomous republic of mordovia, russian federation, in basin of volga river.
the erzya mordvins (erzya: эрзят, erzyat; erzia, erza), speak erzya, , moksha mordvins (moksha: мокшет, mokshet), speak moksha, 2 major groups. qaratay mordvins live in kama tamağı district of tatarstan, , have shifted speaking tatar, albeit large proportion of mordvin vocabulary (substratum). teryukhan, living in nizhny novgorod oblast of russia, switched russian in 19th century. teryukhans recognize term mordva pertaining themselves, whereas qaratay call muksha. tengushev mordvins live in southern mordovia , transitional group between moksha , erzya. western erzyans called shoksha (or shoksho). isolated bulk of erzyans, , dialect/language has been influenced mokshan dialects.
