after outbreak of german revolution in 1918, both emperor wilhelm ii , crown prince signed document of abdication. on 13 november, former crown prince went exile , interned on island of wieringen (now part of mainland), near den helder in netherlands. in fall of 1921, gustav stresemann visited wilhelm , crown prince voiced interest in returning germany, private citizen. after stresemann became chancellor in august 1923, wilhelm allowed return after giving assurances no longer engage in politics. chose 9 november 1923 this, infuriated father, had not been informed plans of son , felt historic date inappropriate.
in june 1926, referendum on expropriating former ruling princes of germany without compensation failed , consequence, financial situation of hohenzollern family improved considerably. settlement between state , family made cecilienhof property of state granted right of residence wilhelm , cecilie. limited in duration 3 generations. family kept ownership of monbijou palace in berlin, oels castle in silesia , rheinsberg palace until 1945.
wilhelm broke promise had made stresemann stay out of politics. adolf hitler visited wilhelm @ cecilienhof 3 times, in 1926, in 1933 (on day of potsdam ) , in 1935. wilhelm joined stahlhelm merged in 1931 harzburg front, right-wing organisation of opposed democratic republic.
the former crown prince reportedly interested in idea of running reichspräsident right-wing candidate against paul von hindenburg in 1932, until father forbade him acting on idea. after plans become president had been blocked father, wilhelm supported hitler s rise power.
