tropical cyclone yasi

on january 12, rsmc nadi reported tropical depression had developed on fijian island of vanua levu, 430 km (270 mi) south of labasa. on next few days, depression moved towards southeast before started affect tonga on january 15. during following day, depression rapidly developed further interacted south pacific convergence zone, before npmoc initiated warnings on system , designated 08p. @ 0000 utc on january 17, npmoc reported depression had reached peak 1-minute sustained windspeeds of 85 km/h (50 mph) while rsmc nadi reported depression had intensified tropical cyclone while located 510 km (320 mi) southeast of nukualofa, tonga. rsmc nadi did not name yasi 12 hours, while system reached peak 10-minute sustained windspeeds of 85 km/h (50 mph). after named on january 17, yasi accelerated towards southeast, before moved out of rsmc nadi s area of responsibility. during january 18, npmoc issued final warning because yasi had degenerated extratropical cyclone. tcwc wellington monitored yasi s remnants day, before dissipated 1520 km (940 mi) south of papette, french polynesia. although no major damage reported of islands affected minor damage reported in tonga, after yasi caused heavy rainfall there.



tropical cyclone zaka

on march 9, rsmc nadi started monitor tropical depression had developed within active convergence zone, 150 km (95 mi) northwest of noumea, new caledonia. during day upper level trough moved on new zealand brought jet stream on new caledonia. result, made depression hard locate satellite imagery. however, later day despite system being poorly organized, rsmc nadi reported depression had intensified tropical cyclone , named zaka. named rsmc nadi reported system had reached peak 10-minute sustained windspeeds of 65 km/h (40 mph) further development of system restricted strong vertical wind shear. on march 10, jtwc designated zaka tropical cyclone 20p, while had peak 1-minute windspeeds of 75 km/h (45 mph). rsmc nadi issued final advisory @ 0600 utc, zaka had weakened tropical depression , moving tcwc wellingtons area of responsibility. tcwc wellington , jtwc monitored zaka day before last noted during march 11 became extratropical cyclone. zaka dumped 376 mm (14.8 in) of rain on vanuatu in 24 hours.



tropical cyclone atu

on march 4, jtwc started monitor area of disturbed weather had developed within australian region 900 km (560 mi), southeast of port moresby in papua new guinea. on next few days, system remained weak , gradually moved southeast before crossed 160°e , moved basin on march 9. during next day, both jtwc , rsmc nadi started monitor system tropical depression moved through loyalty islands. on march 11, depression intensified tropical cyclone moved southeastward, prompting rsmc nadi name atu @ 1800 utc. on march 12, jtwc reported atu had reached peak 1-minute windspeeds of 100 km/h (65 mph). later morning rsmc nadi reported atu had reached peak 10-minute sustained windspeeds of 85 km/h (50 mph). after had peaked in intensity, atu weakened under influence of strong vertical windshear before jtwc , rsmc nadi issued final advisories during march 13 atu had become extratropical. atu s remnants monitored rsmc nadi , tcwc wellington until dissipated on march 18.



severe tropical cyclone beti

on march 19, jtwc started monitor tropical disturbance located 1145 km (710 mi) northwest of suva, fiji. on next couple of days system moved towards south , gradually developed further in area of low vertical windshear, before system designated tropical depression 23p jtwc , rsmc nadi on march 21. on next couple of days, 23p moved further towards south, before depression started move towards southwest ridge of high pressure strengthened on march 23. later day, rsmc nadi reported depression had intensified category 1 tropical cyclone , named beti. during day, beti continued develop further before system moved coral sea on march 24, after passing on vanuatuan islands of pentecost , malekula. beti moved coral sea, system intensified further, rsmc nadi reporting on march 25 beti had intensified category 3 severe tropical cyclone. beti intensified severe tropical cyclone, ridge of high pressure weakened interacted upper level trough of low pressure. result, system started move towards south-southeast.


over next couple of days beti continued intensify moved towards new caledonia, before jtwc reported @ 1800 utc on march 26, beti had reached peak 1-minute sustained windspeeds of 195 km/h (120 mph). 6 hours later, rsmc nadi reported system had peaked category 4 severe tropical cyclone 10-minute sustained windspeeds of 165 km/h (105 mph). later on march 27, severe tropical cyclone beti made landfall on grande terre island of new caledonia near peak intensity , weakened category 2 tropical cyclone. during next day, beti moved towards southeast under influence of trough, reemerging coral sea weakening tropical cyclone had started transition extratropical cyclone. later on march 28, rsmc nadi passed primary warning responsibility of cyclone tcwc wellington, before jtwc issued final advisory on beti had become extratropical. on next few days, tcwc wellington continued monitor beti s remnants, came under influence of high pressure area , moved around new zealand s east coast, before last noted on april 2 while located 1400 km (870 mi) southeast of wellington.


while active, cyclone beti responsible 2 deaths , caused damage in australia, new caledonia, new zealand, , vanuatu. significant damage occurred in new caledonia wind , flooding destroyed crops, gardens , caused disruption electricity network, water supply, road , telephone communications. many homes , roads badly damaged, on 50% of lower standard housing on outskirts of noumea damaged after rivers , creeks burst banks. press reports indicated beti inflicted between ff 22-7007270000000000000♠27 million (us$4.3 - 7006530000000000000♠5.3 million) in damage new caledonia , few injuries had occurred. within vanuatu, beti caused 7006450000000000000♠vuv4.5 million, (7004410000000000000♠us$41 thousand) in damage food gardens , shelters. extratropical cyclone, beti generated high surf , long period swells hit both eastern australia , new zealand. within australia, high surf left several competitors in australian life surfing championships injured, while competitor killed after boat swamped large waves. within new zealand, beti s remnants caused flooding , mud-slips, led several roads being closed. helicopter , pilot lost @ height of storm, while travelling napier gisborne.



other systems

during december 23, remnants of severe tropical cyclone gertie, moved westwards off australian mainland , coral sea near maryborough. after moving coral sea, system underwent pierod of rapid intensification, during reintensified tropical cyclone , caused gale force winds along southern queensland coast. during following day, gale force winds eased along queensland coast, gertie moved north-eastwards south pacific basin peaked 10-minute sustained windspeeds of 75 km/h (45 mph). system subsquently passed south of new caledonia , last noted during december 24, weakened below tropical cyclone intensity. during february 12, tropical low developed west of new caledonia. on next 24 hours low deepened 1,002 hpa (29.59 inhg) before crossed 160°e , moved australian region became known queen elizabeth ii storm. on february 22 , 23, shallow tropical depression moved around fijian archipelago , caused flooding of low-lying areas in vanua levu.
