during 1980s, hiv-tainted blood products used in japanese hospitals, particularly treatment of hemophiliacs. estimated figure of hemophiliacs inadvertently infected hiv through tainted blood 50%.


in 1989, hemophiliac groups brought lawsuits against ministry of health , welfare , several drug companies. particular controversy centered on centers continued use of non-heat-treated blood products after heat-treatment methods had been developed prevent spread of infection.
