regular season

since moving los angeles, lakers repeatedly foiled boston celtics in attempts capture nba title. lakers lost championship them 6 times in 8 years. in 1970, aging celtics out of title contention, lakers lost in nba finals new york knicks. in 1971, after losing jerry west season-ending injury in february, lost in western conference finals powerful milwaukee bucks.


going 1971–72 season, many experts thought chance @ championship had passed aging team. star players wilt chamberlain, elgin baylor, , jerry west in 30s, , had missed significant time due injuries in prior 2 seasons. defending champion milwaukee bucks, led superstar kareem abdul-jabbar appeared starting new nba dynasty. new coach bill sharman still believed lakers had talent contend. introduced strict conditioning drills , implemented running fast break based offense. re-tooled wilt chamberlain s game focus on defense, rebounding, , jump starting fast break quick outlet passes guards jerry west , gail goodrich. casualty of system aging baylor, not physically handle tempo practices , offense , retired 9 games season. replaced @ small forward jim mcmillian played @ near star level.


shortly thereafter, lakers strung record 33-game win streak. streak ended on january 9, 1972, against milwaukee bucks. lakers , bucks staged season long race league s best record, lakers setting nba record 69 wins (the bucks had second best record @ 63–19).
