davis continued perform @ elite level throughout 1890s, regularly ranking among league leaders in doubles, triples, rbi, , stolen bases. had batting average of more .300 9 consecutive seasons beginning in 1893. began playing more shortstop in 1896 , moved position full-time next season. in 1897, davis hit .353 , registered league-best 135 rbi. led league in double plays , fielding percentage 4 times each.


during playing career, davis enjoyed reputation intelligent , hard-working player did not participate in dirty play. on way practice @ polo grounds on april 26, 1900, davis , teammates kid gleason , mike grady stumbled upon raging tenement fire. players rushed building , rescued 2 women , three-year-old child. fire left 45 families homeless. davis said, didn t much. went ladder same rest of boys , helped carry down women , children... didn t half as grady , gleason. face blistered heat, davis helped team earn 10–10 tie boston beaneaters evening.
