biography
early years , education

hurley born on october 21, 1966 in endicott, new york. graduated owego free academy in owego, new york in 1984. graduated magna cum laude honors tulane university, earning b.s.e. in civil engineering in 1988. distinguished graduate both tulane s nrotc program , usmc officer candidates school.


marine corps career

hurley received commission second lieutenant in united states marine corps naval reserve officer training corps @ tulane university, new orleans, louisiana, in 1988. after graduation, attended basic school @ marine corps base quantico, virginia, , later infantry officers course. following aviation indoctrination @ naval air station pensacola, florida, entered flight training in texas in 1989; distinguished graduate of u.s. navy pilot training program , designated naval aviator in august 1991.


hurley reported vmfat-101 @ marine corps air station el toro, california, initial f/a-18 hornet training. upon completion of training, assigned vmfa(aw)-225 made 3 overseas deployments western pacific. while assigned vmfa(aw)-225, attended united states marine aviation weapons , tactics instructor course, marine division tactics course, , aviation safety officers course @ naval postgraduate school in monterey, california. on 4 , half years “vikings”, served aviation safety officer , pilot training officer.


hurley selected attend united states naval test pilot school @ naval air station patuxent river, maryland, , began course in january 1997. after graduation in december 1997, assigned naval strike aircraft test squadron (vx-23) f/a-18 project officer , test pilot. @ “strike”, participated in variety of flight testing including flying qualities, ordnance separation, , systems testing , became first marine pilot fly f/a-18 e/f super hornet. serving operations officer when selected astronaut program. hurley has logged on 3,200 hours in more 22 aircraft.

selected pilot nasa in july 2000, hurley reported training in august 2000. following completion of 2 years of training , evaluation, assigned technical duties in astronaut office have included kennedy operations support “cape crusader” lead asp (astronaut support personnel) shuttle missions sts-107 , sts-121. has worked shuttle landing , rollout, served on columbia reconstruction team @ kennedy space center , in exploration branch in support of selection of orion crew exploration vehicle.


he served nasa director of operations @ gagarin cosmonaut training center in star city, russia. in july 2009, pilot on sts-127, iss assembly mission 2j/a, delivered japanese-built exposed facility (jem-ef) , experiment logistics module exposed section (elm-es) international space station. mission duration 15 days, 16 hours, 45 minutes.


on july 2011, hurley returned space on sts-135 on space shuttle atlantis. mission delivered multi-purpose logistics module (mplm) raffaello , lightweight multi-purpose carrier (lmc) international space station tested system investigated potential of robotically refueling existing spacecraft. sts-135 mission duration 12 days, 18 hours, 27 minutes , 56 seconds. overall, hurley has accumulated on 683 hours in space.


after returning earth, has served assistant director, new programs, flight crew operations directorate (fcod) @ johnson space center, , on august 2014 became assistant director commercial crew program following merger of flight operations , mission operations.


in july 2015, nasa announced hurley 1 of first astronauts u.s. commercial spaceflights. subsequently, has started working boeing , spacex train in commercial crew vehicles, along other chosen astronauts - sunita williams, robert behnken , eric boe.
