on 10 june 2009, hull city officially announced part of barclays asia trophy 2009. in 4-team tournament hull city competed against 2 english sides, tottenham hotspur , west ham united, local side beijing guoan, beat 5–4 on penalty shoot out after 1–1 draw. on 31 july 2009, hull city faced tottenham hotspur in final of barclays asia trophy , defeated 3–0. on 6 august 2009, hull city acquired american international striker jozy altidore on loan spanish side villarreal, option buy him after 2009–10 season.

on 9 june 2017, club announced appointment of leonid slutsky head coach. on 3 december 2017, leonid slutsky , oleg yarovinsky left club mutual consent after run of bad results.
